10 Unusual Places to Discover in the Lille Metropolitan Area This Summer
Everyone knows Lille’s Grand-Place and Old Lille. But the Lille metropolitan area has many other surprises in store: a modernist castle in Croix, a museum where the rides actually spin, a forest with treehouses… Here are 10 unique spots for a summer off the beaten path, all less than 30 minutes from Lille.
1. Villa Cavrois, the Modernist Castle in Croix
Just five minutes from our doorstep, Villa Cavrois is one of the most beautiful 20th-century houses in France. Built in 1932 by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens for a textile industrialist from Roubaix, it underwent thirteen years of restoration before reopening to the public in 2015. Yellow bricks, geometric lines, and restored original furniture: a true journey back in time. Open Tuesday through Sunday; closed on Mondays.
2. The LaM and its sculpture garden (Villeneuve-d’Ascq)
The LaM brings together three rare collections under one roof: modern art, contemporary art, and art brut. But the real highlight in the summer is its free, open-access park, dotted with monumental sculptures that you can explore barefoot on the grass. Perfect for families or for a cultural getaway without spending a dime.
3. Mosaïc, the Garden of Cultures (Houplin-Ancoisne)
Located south of Lille, Mosaïc is a landscaped park dedicated to the cultures of the world. Themed gardens, workshops, playgrounds, and walking trails as far as the eye can see. Open from April through October, it’s one of the most enjoyable summer outings for those who want to enjoy nature without venturing far from the city.
4. The Asnapio Archaeological Park (Villeneuve-d’Ascq)
An immersive journey through time: Asnapio recreates prehistoric, Gallic, and medieval settlements in an open-air setting. We move from one era to the next. Guided tours and workshops for children all summer long. A great option if you’re traveling with young children.
5. The Phalempin Forest and its treehouses
Located southeast of Lille, the Phalempin Forest is one of the most beautiful wooded areas in the Nord department. Shaded trails, scenic overlooks, and shy wildlife. For those who love unique experiences, the cabins at Les Nids de Chlorofil even let you sleep high up in the trees, just a stone’s throw from the city.
6. The Funfair Museum (Lille)
Hidden behind an unassuming facade just a stone’s throw from the Saint-Sauveur train station, this museum has one unique feature: its rides actually spin. Antique carousels, carnival rides, and attractions from the early 20th century. Guided tours are held on the first Saturday of every month. A haven of nostalgia in the heart of the city.
7. Le Fresnoy (Tourcoing)
Le Fresnoy is a national studio for contemporary arts, an art school, and an exhibition space. The building’s architecture, restored by Bernard Tschumi, is worth the trip in and of itself. Several exhibitions a year, often partially free, and a high-quality film program.
8. La Condition Publique (Roubaix)
A former wool-processing facility converted into a cultural center, the Condition Publique brings together everything we love about Roubaix: concerts, exhibitions, markets, and restaurants. The 19th-century building is spectacular. Regular free events throughout the summer.
9. The Roubaix Canal by paddleboard or canoe
Although little known, the Roubaix Canal has been rediscovered in recent years. In the summer, paddleboard and canoe rentals allow visitors to explore the city from the water, passing by revitalized industrial brownfields and green corridors. A true urban oasis, just ten minutes from Croix.
10. Lille’s Outdoor Movie Theaters in the Summer
Every summer, several squares and parks in Lille are transformed into pop-up movie theaters. Programming for the general public, a friendly atmosphere, with blankets and lounge chairs available if desired.
